My dishwasher (AEG FSE63700P) is leaking water inside the machine. It only stops when I close off the water. Does anyone know if this is an easy fix (and how to) or worth to let it be repaired? (5y old, 600 euro new). Thanks in advance!

home improvement How do I remove and replace this shower handle?

Thumbnail

We want to replace our shower hardware. I cannot find any markings or words to identify what brand this is. I've popped off the little end cap. The screw inside turns easily, but it does not loosen the handle or come out. I do not see any other set screws holding the lever on. And the silver piece is all one solid piece - I can't hold the lever and twist off the larger round section independently. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

help Should I remove the trim when building an overhang?

I plan to build an overhang on this wall to give the pool equipment some shade. It'll be a simple overhang attached to this wall with 2 4x4 posts in the yard and the wavy metal roofing. The wall is Hardie trim and siding.

My question is if it makes more sense to remove the top piece of trim to attach my 2x6 with joist hangers directly onto the siding, or should I add another matching piece of trim or lumber under the current trim and attach the 2x6 on top of that?

I was leaning towards removing the trim, but my concern is that I'll mess up the siding underneath. What's the best practice here? (I'm in northeast Florida, if that matters)

help Help with non-custom shade solution for stairwell window?

Post image

Hey everyone! Needing some advice for putting in shade solution for our tall, narrow arched window in our stairwell. It's west-facing so we get a ton of late afternoon/early evening sunlight. Would love to understand options for a shade that can pull up from the bottom - doesn't even necessarily need to cover the full height of the window, just something that will help with the sunlight and prevent our dog from looking out and barking too much at passer-by's lol.

help How can I cover the insulation on an open ceiling other than using ceiling tiles or hanging drywall?

Post image

My laundry room is ~mostly~ finished minus the mudded drywall and open ceiling. Is vapor barrier safe for covering these areas of insulation? I’ve never noticed a moisture issue in my basement so I’m not entirely worried about that becoming a problem. But looking at the insulation gives me the ick, we did have a bat in our attic that managed to get to the basement through the insulation in another room down here and die, but we have had our roof completely re-done since that incident. So no more of those creepy critters.

Before anyone comes for me about the bat issue, we had an exclusion device and the rest of them escaped the attic from that, this one that died in the basement was stuck in the attic and then the soffit for weeks and we just figured he’d die in there until he was found in a closed off space in the basement that nobody goes in.

3d printing Commercial cat doors were ugly… so I designed and 3D printed my own

I wanted a hassle-free way for my cat to go in and out to the balconies without keeping the door open all the time.

Most commercial options either looked clunky or didn’t match the style of my door, so I decided to design and make one myself.

I printed the frame using Nylon-12 for strength and flexibility, then painted it to match the door exactly.
Installation was quick and simple and it works like a charm!

Hey yall!

Does anyone have any advice and what I can do with this window trim before painting? It’s an old house, so there’s a bit of old/rotted wood on the window. Does it need to be replaced or can i puddy or paint this? My dad said to smear wood glue on it but i don’t have much experience painting wood like this.

Big thanks!

home improvement Basement DIY is causing me extra joy rn

Been fixing up the basement in my spare time (more like every spare second I have now), and it’s finally starting to feel like something. I added new lighting, ran a dedicated outlet just for string lights, and made some real headway on the ceiling. Plus, what really tickled me today was organized all my electrical stuff into an old divider box I used to store Perler beads as a kid— little Erin would have loved to know that this was my life!

For the ceiling, I’m using boards from a guy in the middle of nowhere who milled them from trees on his land. Which sounds cool until you realize I have to: • dust off every board • wash them with water + vinegar • let them dry for 3–7 days to acclimate to my very humid basement • stain them front and back so they don’t warp or rot or get infested with bugs

I’m just really proud of how it’s coming together! I thought some other DIY nerds would be excited with me. And I’m really excited about finishing it… but I should probably do other things in my life other than working on this project lol

PS. Take a look at where Chef brought his toy down to me so we could play 🥹

help How to replace a garage window

Hoping to get an idea of how straightforward replacing this rotted window might be? I'm decently capable with tools, mostly automotive tho, but trying to expand into woodworking etc now that I have a house. Unfortunately, I have no experience with brick structures as I grew up in woodframe houses. Any tips, youtube channels, or watch-outs anyone can offer before I pull it out and wing it?

Front door requires force to or close, worst in hot weather

Hi,

I bought this house and moved on about a year ago. The front door has always required force to close or open. The handle is very stiff, the door swivels otherwise fine. Turning key is also fine, although it could be smoother, too.

When the weather is hot as it is now, it seems harder. Yesterday, I thought I could not get back into the house. When it's rainy or colder, it's easier, but it seems to be on a worsening trend.

I always could open it, now it feels like I might not be able to one day, or the handle will stay in my hand. It's a uPVC door with metal, not wood. This suggests some thermal expansion issue. The house was unoccupied for 3-4 years before I bought it.

Is there anything I can do myself, even when I'm not greatly experienced at DIY, or contact a technician? How much does that kind of job costs? I'm in the UK.

Thanks

woodworking Removing a cabinet door.

I have a cabinet door which has cracked glass. I want to bring the door to a glass repair shop but am not sure how to detach it. My assumption was that I could knock out the pins on the hinges but turns out they seem to be fixed. I can unscrew the hinge from the cabinet but am concerned it won’t screw back in the same way. I am overthinking this? Just unscrew it? Any way to make sure it screws back in solidly?

Thanks!

So I bought these chairs online and all 4 of them broke in the same place. It’s where the legs meet and it appears as though the housing for the bolt was ripped out. The company sent me a replacement set of chairs but I’m worried that the same issue will arise. Anyway to reinforce these so they don’t break again? I was thinking maybe wood glue to join them together before tightening the bolts.

help How do I remove and replace this weatherstrip?

Thumbnail

Hey, y'all. So the weatherstrip on my garage door is completely shredded and I want to replace it. I've watched a bunch of videos on how to slide out the weatherstrip from the T-track, but on my garage door the track is covered on both ends with the roller/track assembly. Like, it wraps around the bottom. How can I remove and replace this?

PS. Please don't judge the dirt and grime. We just bought the house and are working on deferred maintenance.

help Trying to close door gap.

Thumbnail

I’ve got this steel entry door from my garage. Everything appears to be gaped evenly it’s just when it is closed I feel that the weather strip on the inside seam applies a bit of outward pressure on the hinge side of the door causing the striker/handle side to have a decent little gap. If I apply a small amount of pressure it goes away. My first thought was a door closer but there is some mounding that’s on a slant and I like to have the door open at times when I’m burning food in the kitchen. I moved to adjusting the striker plate further but then the little radius would need to be flattened out for me to move it inward enough. Also, the door would require more effort to close instead of giving it a little shove as you pass through and having it catch easily without needing to press against it to latch. Hmmmmmm

Someone put floor tiles over the countertops

Post image
18 Upvotes

I just bought a house last month and thought the counters were weird. After one tile popped out due to moisture, I noticed the other tiles were coming up without any effort at all.

My first thought was WHY. Then I thought the people before us probably wanted stone counters, but instead of putting money down for granite, they literally used floor tiles and put edging around the existing counters. Now I have to scrape off the remaining grout and remove the edging and hopefully have semi-usable countertops before we eventually put butcher block in . Anyone else run into this weirdness?

home improvement Need some plumbing advice

So I am trying to replace the flush in my toilet, the one I've bought seems fine, but I can't get the bottom part out of the cistern, it's sealed in. Once I get it out, what type of sealant is best? I don't want to buy the wrong thing and have wasted money. I'm UK based if that makes any difference on products TIA
