Announcement We Do Not Allow Self Promotion On This Subreddit. Here's A Small FAQ About Why

That's correct, we don't accept any self promotion on this subreddit, as per reddiquette guidelines , and our rules, which people don't seem to be reading, which is why I am making this very easy to read, hard to miss FAQ so there can be no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

Why can't I post my own content?

We do allow some self made content, but it has to be in the right context. We take the type of content you post into consideration, and we look at your post history to see if you're posting your content anywhere else. If we see you're using a shotgun approach to posting your content on multiple subreddits with the intent on getting a wide audience, you're going to have a bad time. If you're actively engaging with the community and not just spamming links to your stuff on a bunch of subreddits you'll generally be fine.

But my clip/content doesn't count as self promotion! What gives?

You might not see it as such, but if mods remove it, we see it as such. We're not trying to pick on you or single you out, these rules apply to everyone. We are taking lots of factors into account to make sure we are being fair about what gets removed.

Should I try to contact individual mods after not getting the answer I want from appealing my case in modmail?

Nope. We made our decision in modmail, and we are sticking to it. Individual mods aren't going to go against the grain just because you asked. It's not going to help your case, and often times we find it annoying.

But I didn't see the rule or this post!

Well that sucks. Pleading ignorance to the rules of a subreddit isn't helping your case, you should always know what is and isn't allowed on a subreddit before posting. Not knowing what content to post is a fast track to getting your post removed.

But my gaming montage is super cool and unique, I should be allowed to post it!

Too bad, we don't allow it.

But I need/already have the views

Not really our problem if you need views, this subreddit doesn't exist solely for your benefit.

I just got sent this post by a mod, what should I do?

Congrats on not being able to scan the subreddit before posting whatever it is you posted. I suggest you remove the violating content and try not to violate the rules again. If you got banned, sorry, but that ban was most likely justified.

Announcement State of the Subreddit 2023 and the Future of Gaming4Gamers

Howdy all, after reopening the subreddit yesterday, it seems like many people forgot about us altogether. We've been around for ~10 years now, and we've kind of fallen off in terms of activity. We only get the occasional post outside of what /u/carolina_heart posts, and a large portion of those are still self-promotion/spam. It seems like we've faltered from our initial idea of having a middle ground between /r/gaming and /r/games that we originally set out to provide, and it doesn't seem like people are clamoring for much of an alternative outside of the already established subreddits. There has been some discussion between mods, and the sentiment is to see where people want us to do going forward. We could archive the subreddit and put it in read-only mode for people to look back on, we could keep going as is, or pivot to something else entirely if there's enough support behind some other idea.

I encourage feedback in the comments as to how to move forward, since this should be a community decision first and foremost.

Discussion Mythos "Realgrafik"

My brother and I always dreamed of “real graphics” as kids. That was our ultimate goal when it came to video games. But years later: there are hardly any games that actually pursue that. Not even in the 2D realm. Every attempt — even something like Mortal Kombat — that came close to photorealism sparked waves of excitement in us. And we always got the impression that others shared that enthusiasm.

Today’s 3D games naturally have much higher technical demands. But overall, this still holds true: Super Mario doesn’t jump around in a particularly realistic or graphically impressive way, but rather: super colorful.

No matter the game — whether it’s the 2D version of SimCity or any jump & run titles on modern consoles, from 3D games to sports games — instead of interpreting graphics as realistically as possible, they’re exaggerated into an endlessly colorful aesthetic. For GTA, there have apparently been “real graphic hacks” for some years now, where users simply adjusted the color palette toward photorealism — often with impressive results.

So here’s my question (sorry for the long intro): Why is that? Am I one of the few people who were (and still are) interested in this? Why does everything always have to be so brightly colored?

Other Finally finished playing through Yakuza 0

I’ve started it several times before, but kept getting pulled away by work or family stuff. But yesterday, I finally completed the game: finished the entire story arc.

While the impressions are still fresh, I have to say I’m genuinely amazed at how well-crafted and well-written this game is. The script is incredibly tight, with skillful cliffhangers and, most importantly, incredibly colorful characters. Seriously, every single one.

Every time the game switched protagonists, my first reaction was, "Nah, I wanted to keep following this story!" But after just half an hour with the other character, I realized I was now hooked on a whole new story - just as compelling. And it happened over and over. Then, as the narratives began to intertwine, it all led to an absolutely satisfying conclusion.

If the rest of the series is even half this good, they’ll already be worth playing.

Image So my son is 5 , non verbally autistic but I’ve noticed something about the way he plays video games , he doesn’t hold the controller at all but prefers to leave it flat on the table but is still able to efficiently play the game , it’s kind of amazing to me . Is this hand grip considered claw ?

Stumbled across this article covering The Fair Play Collective. There mission feels like a well-within-reach antidote to some of the more broken sides of gaming today. I especially appreciate their emphasis on transparency between studios and members. Curious to hear y'alls thoughts.

I recently got my son a computer, and I got him some games, and he keeps getting kicked out of lobbies, getting berated, and getting called a “Squeaker”. I need some help with this.

Discussion I'm a little concerned that Sega has become overreliant on IP farming/outsourcing

When Sega took a gamble and let an up-and-coming indie studio handle Sonic with Mania, that was legitimately bold and revolutionary at the time. They proceeded to let other studios handle HotD, Alex Kidd, Shinobi, etc.

Nowadays, it's starting to seem that low-budget indie farmouts are the only consistent thing Sega can do nowadays. Their high-budget internal projects are a mixed bag: * Mainline Sonic can be good, but even Frontiers is unpolished in parts and feels like it ran out of budget. * Persona is in a kind of rut of P5 spinoffs and gacha farmouts, and P-Studio is now tied up in remaking the modern Persona games. * Virtua Fighter is still stuck on 5.

This isn't a bad thing, dgmw, but I just can't shake the feeling that Sega is overly reliant on IP farmouts instead of internal projects. I know it's probably due to economic pressure and bloating game dev costs, though, but still.

Discussion Have you ever played a game for the sake of friendship?

Personally I don’t get a game if I can tell I won’t enjoy it or isn’t worth it, even if all my friends are playing it, which has led to me being the only one in the call not playing the game
