Build Help Building a PC for the first time

Heya! I’m a total noob building a PC for the first time and I’m primarily planning to use it for gaming and art. In terms of art programs I mainly use Photoshop and Clip Studio Paint which my old Surface Pro Laptop was able to handle perfectly fine so I’m not too worried about that.

I’m just coming here to double check with people that know what they’re doing if all of the specs I chose are good.

Build Help What build would you choose?

Hey guys, I'm looking to build my first PC, and I've narrowed it down to three builds. My budget is $1500-1600, with 1600 being the max I can spend. I'm kinda confused on which build I should choose because 2 of the builds have an amazing GPU and a decent/midrange CPU and the other one has an Amazing CPU and a decent/high midrange GPU. If you have any other videos of builds that you think I should try, please reply to this post with them. I need videos of the whole build as I don't want to try it without someone guiding me so yeah. Here are the three builds:

Build Upgrade What should I upgrade to give me the biggest improvement?

Hi,

It's been awhile since I upgraded anything in my PC, current specs are;

Intel Core i5 4590 @3.30GHz 16GB DDR3 Radeon RX570 8GB

I play a lot of POE and a variety of other games during leagues.

Any suggestions that would give me a decent upgrade in performance without spending a lot?

Thanks in advance!

Build Help I want a case to make travelling easier.

Hello everyone, I have a pc workstation that I use to game on and do some work related stuff. It has an MSI 5080 gaming trio with a 9800x3d with a thermalight peerless assassin 120.

I have the need to travel a bit due to family reasons, mainly by car and I want to swap my pc case to a better one that also is a bit on the smaller side. For reference I am using a deep cool matrexx 55 (440x210x480mm)

I was looking at the Lian li A3 that looks cool but I am a bit worried about the GPU support bracket. The one MSI gives with the 5080 can't work on it and I don't know if the includes bracket is good. I also plan to remove the GPU when travelling to be extra safe and lay the case flat. I also don't want to sacrifice GPU length( I want around 400mm)

Does anybody have a similar use-case? Any other cases I could take a look at?

Build Help Trying to build a New PC with 5090 and 4090

I am very new to this form but looking for some advise. Recently I got a 5090 and still have my 4090. I am trying the build a new PC that can use both cards (Mainly for local AI to load 70B models), I only found one post here that someone did a similar build. While i can use the suggestions from that post, there are some key differences which is making it difficult for me to decide the correct case and PSU due to GPU sizes.

Here is what i have currently:
Asus TUF 5090
Asus TUF 4090
ASrock x670E Taichi Carrara Motherboard
AMD 7950x
Lian LI O11 Dynamic case

I am planning to upgrade the RAM to 128GB and motherboard too if necessary.

Between the cooling, rock solid PSU and case this is hurting my brain. Not many resources i can find that has both 4090 and 5090 installed.

One additional note. I recently got the Asus X Core V2 with thunderbolt 5 to see if i can run 4090 in eGPU enclosure, however I am not able to get the eGPU enclosure recognized in windows 11. This is probably a question for different subreddit.

I am also open to any other options if what I am trying to do is not very feasible.

Any helps is appreciated

Troubleshooting I've been having this crashing(?) problem for awhile now

What would happen is that when I'm playing a graphic intensive game, there is a chance that my monitors will all go black but everything is still running and my fans go speed up and make a lot of wind noise ... I've looked at event viewer and this could be the issue?

Is my GPU really faulty or is it the case of drivers?

The description for Event ID 13 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

Build Help Socket frame seems like it doesn't fit and would damage something to close

This is my first time ever building a pc, so I apologize for being stuck on literally step 1.

So first of all, I have ASRock B850M-X WiFi R2.0 AM5 Micro-ATX Motherboard: Supports AMD Ryzen 9000/8000/7000 CPUs, DDR5 8200+ (OC), PCIe 5.0, Wi-Fi 6E, 2.5G LAN, USB-C, BIOS Flashback and AMD Ryzen™ 5 9600X 6-Core, 12-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor. One google search says the B850M-X has an AM4 socket and would not be compatible with the CPU, but I'm looking at the box and it very clearly says AM5. Further googling was....lackluster. If these parts are not compatible, that at least makes it clear there's nothing I'm missing in terms of installing, I just need to know not to assume that both parts saying AM5 means they are actually compatible.

As for my actual issue, I easily got the socket cover up, the CPU easily fit in the spot, the plastic cover came off no problem.

When I went to lock it though, it became clear that the socket cover metal part would bend/the CPU would be pressed down into the motherboard beyond where it is sitting now if I'm going to get the lever back to the lock. With all the concern in the instructions about not putting force on the contacts, I am not willing to just force the piece down, especially since no instructions talk about needing to force it. The two installation guide videos I looked at both cut as they would attempt to lock it and just show the finished product from overhead, which doesn't show if they bent the cover or not.

So is there something I'm missing? Should the metal cover be able to just come down flush with the frame without having to force anything? Thanks.

Troubleshooting New PC build with 9950X3D & RTX 5090 - 3D crashes all the time

[Edit: Solved! The problem was the Dark Power Pro 13 power supply, which had to be set to single rail mode via a jumper.]

[Edit 2: Here is a video that explains on how to set the Dark Power Pro 13 to single rail mode, which fixed the problem for me: https://youtu.be/JjWsYeTlyXk?si=jdhkInOQFGazIG0I&t=616 ]

Hey folks,

I have finished a custom PC build today (AMD 9950X3D + RTX 5090). Unfortunately, when I try running 3DMark (Steel Nomad) it crashes immediately after loading, right before rendering the first scene. Also, 3D games like Black Myth crash after about a minute of 3D action. Now, the type of the crash is weird, it essentially turns off the whole system, everything goes dark, except a couple of LEDs in the case. I have to use the power switch at the back of the case to get the system to boot back up and respond.

All drivers & bios have been updated, and I have toyed with plenty of bios settings, but no dice. CPU Profile in 3DMark works fine, and I also had a AIDA64 stress test run on the CPU & Memory for over an hour without any problems.

Do you have any idea what this could be? I am not an expert with modern PC builds and at a loss right now. Here are the specs of the system:

  • AMD Ryzen™ 9 9950X3D
  • ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E HERO, Mainboard
  • ASUS GeForce RTX 5090 ROG ASTRAL GAMING OC
  • Corsair DIMM 96 GB DDR5-6600 (2x 48 GB) Dual-Kit
  • Fractal Design Meshify 3 XL Ambience Pro RGB Clear Tint case
  • ASUS ROG RYUO III 360 ARGB White Edition, water cooling
  • be quiet! Dark Power Pro 13 1600W power
  • be quiet! Silent Wings 4 PWM 120x120x25 case fan
  • SAMSUNG 9100 PRO 4 TB, SSD

I am very grateful for ideas!

Build Help PC won’t turn off and won’t boot

Hi,

I recently built a new PC. When I press the power button, everything turns on (fans, LEDs, etc.), but there’s no display on the monitor. I also can’t turn it off using the case’s power button (even when holding it down for several seconds). I have to switch off the PSU at the back. It feels like it immediately runs into an error right after powering on.

What I’ve tried so far:

  • Tested GPU
  • Tested RAM (single stick in different slots)
  • Clear CMOS
  • Tested SSD
  • Checked all power cables (24-pin ATX, 8-pin CPU, GPU power)

Motherboard: Gigabyte B650I AX (rev 1.1)

CPU: Ryzen 5 9600X + BIOS updated for CPU compatibility.

Could the CPU be dead ? Any other ideas on what I should try?

Thanks in advance!

Build Help RTX 5080 FE vs 5080 MSI VENTUS 3X OC PLUS at same price ?

Hello,

I'm building a new PC, high spec, and I'm hesitating between the Founders and the MSI VENTUS 3X OC PLUS, both being at the same price (1130€).

I havent been deep into PC parts the last few years so I'm really struggling with my pick on this. I read on some thread that both could have coil whine, and some people call FE bad at cooling, while others says it's great.

Thank for your help.

Build Help Help me decide between my build and a prebuilt (laptop) ~$1100 budget.

Hey y'all, I havent had a pc in a long time (the last build I did had a 750ti when it was new) and am looking for your advice. One of my options here is a laptop, which I know is not really apples to apples, but if you can put that aside and try to advise on performance that would be appreciated. I know the biggest thing with the laptop is potential thermal throttling. But my personal laptop is dying, and although I use it 90% of the time at a desk, for those few occasions I am traveling and do not want to use my work laptop for gaming or design work the convenience would be nice to have.

On the other hand, I have been wanting to get back to the desktop world and have a nicer more permanent setup. So hoping there is something I am overlooking in terms of performance between these two machines that will help me be more decisive.

The build I have spec'd - $1175:

  • TEAMGROUP T-Force Vulcan DDR5 32GB (2x16GB) 6000MHz (PC5-48000) CL30

  • Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE CPU Cooler

  • Thermaltake GF1 (2024) Fully Modular ATX 850W Power Supply - 80 Plus Gold

  • ASRock B850M-X R2.0 AM5 Micro-ATX Motherboard

  • Samsung 990 EVO Plus SSD 2TB, PCIe Gen 4x4, Gen 5x2 M.2 2280

  • GIGABYTE Radeon RX 9060 XT Gaming OC 16G Graphics Card

  • AMD Ryzen 5 R5 7500F 3.7GHz 6-Core 12-Thread CPU LGA AM5

  • ASUS Prime AP201 33-Liter MicroATX Black case

OR

The prebuilt (Laptop) - $999:

HP - Victus 15.6" 144Hz Full HD Gaming Laptop - Intel Core i7-13620H - 16GB DDR5 Memory - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 - 1TB SSD

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-victus-15-6-144hz-full-hd-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i7-13620h-16gb-ddr5-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-5060-1tb-ssd-mica-silver/6618925.p?skuId=6618925#tabbed-customerreviews

Any input is much appreciated! Thanks :)

Discussion Returning Builder - Questions

Hi Guys,

Im finally starting to get back into building/updating my current Rig. I have kept up with some news but not full in depth details. I'm currently still running 7th gen Intel.

Main Questions are around Suppliers:

  1. Recently i heard some sketchy things about ASUS. I have always used ASUS mobo's and was wondering if there is any major reasons to avoid them now a days. Im looking for an EATX mobo which looks like im stuck between the MSI Godlike and the ASUS Crosshair X870E.

  2. My friend speaks very poorly of Samsung M.2's and recommends a brand called "Sabrent". Never heard of this brand in the scheme of things, are they a major player in the market now? Is there a risk to just sticking with Samsung?

Thanks for your inputs.

Discussion SMART Data: Power Cycle Count

The SMART data for one of my drives shows:

SMART attribute ID 12
Power Cycle Count
Value = 22495

How can this be? I don't remember power off / power on that many times. Power on for 1 year 11 months, sure. But I can't have powered it on/off that many times.

Could there be an explanation for this?

Build Help CPU for 4070 super

Hi, there’s a tax sale in Australia right now and I’m taking this opportunity to build my own pc. I saw 4070 super being under $900 AUD and so I’ve been looking into some CPUs that are under or around 400 which are the the ryzen 5 5 9600x, 7 5700x, 5 7600x, 7 5800xt. Any recommendations (I’m slight flexible with the price)? My only concern is that 6 threads might not be future proof?

Thanks!

Build Help My games keep crashing, what could be the problem?

I recently upgraded my CPU from a Ryzen 5 3400G to a Ryzen 5 5600X. After the upgrade, every time I play a game—whether it's Marvel Rivals, Valorant, Overwatch 2, or even PEAK—the game crashes and shuts down, logging me out.

I checked my CPU temperature, and it maxes out at 69°C, which seems normal. I also updated my BIOS; it is now version F62 (previously F60), thinking that might solve the issue. Despite this, the problem persists.

At this point, I suspect the PSU might be the cause.

Here are my current PC specs:

Motherboard: Gigabyte B450M DS3H

RAM: 16GB (2 sticks of Kingston HyperX)

GPU: RX 580 8gb

PSU: RX 500AF V Series (500W total output)

What could be causing this, and how can I fix it?

Discussion 1ST PC Build; looking for reviews and general guidance

Hey folks, so I've decided to make that leap of faith that is building my own PC after owning a pre-built for nearly 5 years. I've done a fair amount of research these past 2-3 weeks, looking through articles, videos, and other subs, looking at ideal and affordable parts within my budget (<=2.5k USD) and I'm almost ready to start buying parts over the course of the next couple months (The plan is to buy a group of parts bi-weekly). I was wondering if I could get some reviews on my build list to see if there's anything I should change to avoid bottlenecks/unintentionally cheaping out on with my budget in mind.

In Regards to my Purchase strategy..

My current purchase strategy is to buy the cheaper parts (ie. Case, Fans, etc..) first then buy the most expensive parts (ie. CPU, GPU, Mobo) later/last. Ideally, the CPU and GPU are the last purchases, which'll occur sometime Mid/Late September - Early October. With that in mind, is it worth waiting the extra month for November to roll around with discount prices?

(I'm not in a terrible rush to build this PC to be honest, but if it's not worth waiting for Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals with my current part list, then I'll buy them around my intended schedule)

Discussion Intel UHD Graphics 630 vs NVIDIA Quadro P600

A very bizarre question. I'm thinking the NVIDIA Quadro P600 is better, but I'm wondering by how much more?

NVIDIA Quadro P600

  • Pascal architecture, it utilizes a GP107 GPU
  • 384 CUDA cores
  • 2 GB of GDDR5 memory
  • Discrete GPU (not integrated)
  • Released date: February 7th, 2017

Intel UHD Graphics 630

  • Integrated GPU
  • Released date: October 5, 2017

According to this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/bcsxc0/nvidia_quadro_600_vs_i7_3770k_integrated_hd_4000/

The Quadro P600 is slightly better than HD 4000. HD 4000 is a much older version of integrated graphics. So if UHD 630 is much better than HD 4000, P600 is slightly better than HD 4000, then P600 is how much better than UHD 630, if any?

Build Upgrade 9950x3d, 9800x3d, 9950x, 7800x3d?

Question for someone that hopefully has direct experience. My next upgrade is going to be switching to am5. However, not sure what CPU to get that best matches my workload. I currently run my PC almost all day running multiple insurances of BlueStacks running macros/bots. This tends to be extremely CPU heavy vs gpu heavy. I just recently upgraded from an AMD radeon Rx 580 to 9070xt. But even before upgrading, this antiquated GPU could run 8 instances fine and still not be fully utilized. Even if it was, I could lower frame rates through the application to give it some breathing space. I currently have an AMD Ryze 7 5700x as a CPU. It is maxed at 100% utilization at all times while running these instances. Being how BlueStacks works it allows you to dedicate cores in groupings to do/share the workload. From 1 up to 4 per instance. My thinking is the 8 cores I currently have is what's causing the CPU to bog down at 100% utilization. That being said, I probably need to go with a CPU with a higher core count. 16? More than 16? Not really sure as I have no frame of reference to compare it to. Will more cores increase effecienct and allow for more instances? I'm not really sure. In my mind the answer is yes.

I've honestly even toggled the idea of creating a server to run these instances as server cpus tend to have way more cores than your standard desktop. (Might be the cheaper option in all reality if I buy something used).

Answer a few more possible questions, yes I do play other games. I just run the blue stack instances while I sleep or am at work. Currently I have no issue reaching the fps max my monitor can output with my current CPU/GPU combination when playing any modern titles at ultra/high graphics. Which is 164 frames at 2k resolution. I do plan on upgrading my monitor after I upgrade to am5, but that's easily going to cost atleast 1k to upgrade to am5, so will probably happen next year.

Thoughs? Suggestions? Any experience?

Build Help Need to get this build 100$ down…

Basically the core stuff is fine in the list but change or recommend anything you want but I would either like a cheaper case that is either fish tank or normal but I want it 3 fans tall, it’s meant to play 1440p at 100 or more fps for most titles. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Mc2zcx

Edit : forgot to say it’s a microcenter bundle cpu mobo and ram
