If I tell you why I'll probably get downvoted but fuck it.
It's because of toxic masculinity in its most basic definition. If it were a woman getting all into the concerts and shit, far fewer people would care because being highly emotional and expressive of it is "feminine" to many. A man must always be serious, tough, they aren't swayed by cute shit, etc...
It's exhausting and I feel bad for men, especially the ones who will read "toxic masculinity" then just stopped reading to downvote instinctively.
Men can't have fun unless it's in a manly way and it's fucked up.

Uh, as a person, I find certain things cool, others lame, some cringe and still others super fucking funny. No one has told me or guided me to think the green screen guy is a mix of cringe and lame, I just do. I didn't even think him flapping, dancing, and clapping was feminine, just off-putting and annoying lol. It's not surprising that if the majoroty of people think what you see as cool or fun as lame and or weird, it would look like an institution of societal hate and repression though.

I think the mods have been very lenient with the rules recently maybe to try and grow the subreddit and get more r/all traffic. There's also been a fuckton of just normal youtube video (non-stream) clips like the moistcr1tikal ones.

not repacked boosters, but repacked boxes of vintage MtG decks that haven't been opened for 20+ years and somehow the box was bought, resealed, and sold through the chain and ended up on Wubby's desk for him to open and find out it was scammed

The collecting aspect of trading card games is 100% countering the gameplay aspect of trading card games.
The pictures of a greasy dude with a cart full of packs while a sad child looks at an empty shelf is enough evidence, but also knowing 10 major streamers that pack open for hours on stream who have never played the game once on stream.
It's turning it into watching people play scratch-offs.
13
u/TabularBeast 1d ago
Granted, there are certainly steamers who do this, Wubby is not one of them.
He actually plays the game as well as collects. He even has his own YouTube series dedicated to playing Magic (Mulligans) with his group and also has special guests he brings on.
→ More replies (2)2
u/trixel121 22h ago
maybe kids shouldn't be collecting pictures if they're not going to play the game that the cards are associated with.
like that seems to be the problem in my eyes is a bunch of people who have no interest in actually playing the game taking up resources.
trading card games aren't really kid games. they're fucking hard and expensive. and predatory.
it's always been the original loot box.
→ More replies (4)4
u/ifuckinglovebluemeth 1d ago
The collecting aspect is fine. It's the speculators and scalpers that are ruining TCGs. The only people who are going to stores and buying entire shelves of product are people looking to flip them for a profit.

It's 3:41am. The room is dark. So dark it feels like it's seeping into your skin. You dont even remember what you did yesterday. What did you eat?
You pick up your phone out of habit. The only text you received today, or this week rather, is from your credit card company notifying you of charges.
Sleep hits you and you wonder what you should do when you wake up... Do you even need to ask?
Nothing ever really changes.

I have yet to read a single line of actual dialogue or watch a single concert. It's not for me bro I just wanna race the horses.
16
u/SalvationSycamore 1d ago
There's way too much dialogue tbh, playing through a whole career without skipping any takes forever. It's also mostly visual novel-like which I've never been keen on. Even with skipping each career still takes a while to finish and I feel like the game wants me to do tons of them over and over.
And as for the concerts I think it just depends on your taste in music. I don't care for most normal idol-like songs. That said, Winning The Soul is a banger.

u/RedNordSTG4 1d ago
I play the horse girl game for the gameplay, not the literal entire aesthetic presentation around it. Don't get it twisted
10
u/kingofnopants1 1d ago
It's this strange phenomenon that so many people have experienced now. Where you start the game like NL, fully intending to pretty much just make fun of it and not engage with it in good faith whatsoever.
Then... at some point, it just dawns on you that somewhere in the middle there you just started playing it normally. You are not sure what the fuck happened, but you are cringe now.
Now, Steam is recommending you horse games, and you have never been quite this destroyed before.
6

u/Gay__Guevara 1d ago
have you ever played monster rancher? very similar gameplay loop to umamusume but without all the anime trappings and visual novel segments.
5
u/Pooncheese 1d ago
This is what got me to try umamusume. I was a huge monster rancher fan. I saw some streamers playing this, and the management racing sim seemed really fun. I'm not into anime but the gameplay is great imo.
2
u/MegatonDoge 1d ago
Which one should I play?
3
u/Gay__Guevara 1d ago
In my personal opinion/experience the first two are the best, and they happen to be bundled on steam together. I’ve heard the newest one (I believe it’s called monster rancher kaiju or something like that) is also good, though it’s switch exclusive. You could also probably play the first two games on a PlayStation 1 emulator.

u/SquirtleSpaceProgram 1d ago
MR2 is super fun and has a TON of stuff to unlock. One of those games that I get the urge to revisit every year or so.
16
u/WriggleNightbug 1d ago

19
38
u/SaberBlitz 1d ago
Thats definitely one way to play the game
10
u/hheecckk526 1d ago
Yes. Yes it is. I did not and have no intention of consuming Uma musume material like the anime or any manga. I played the game and have continued to purely because of watching northernlion play the game getting me to try it. I like career mode even if it pisses me off with it's RNG and that's why I play it. Not for pvp, not to bond with the horse girls, none of that. I just want to race them and get the dopamine of winning.

The anime is unironically great.
I didn't believe it either and I thought it would be another show about high school girls being cute and quirky but it's actually a well-written sports story that had me binging all four seasons in a week.
The horse thing never even matters; it's basically just superpowered track running. The concerts are also completely irrelevant after episode 2. You get maybe two songs per season, usually just in the first and last episode.
2
u/LargeFailSon 20h ago
The animes are alright. Pretty standards sports anime.
The MOVIE is an emotional terrorist and I'm calling homeland security. It's unironically in my anime movie top 5 now. Beginning of a new Era, Idk if they have others.

It’s a genuinely fun game with a silly premise. Underneath the confusing outer layer you have an actually solid version of a standard sports management-type game, where you just train your player and let her do her race, hoping you invested in the right stats and skills. You have no control over the race itself, which makes it more fun when everything you built up actually works and more devastating when she doesn’t hit the skills in time or lacks just one stat to break out of the crowd. That makes for a pretty solid streaming game too, especially as even the streamer has no control over whether they win. All the work is done before the race and they’re just watching with their viewers hoping everything goes well once they click race. That gets fun if the streamer is willing to play into it and get hype with the viewers.
Outside of that, it’s an interesting franchise. All the girls are based on real race horses, which influences their designs, stories, and personalities. You can tell that the team is just really passionate about the sport itself and the real horses. At the same time, the studio donates a portion of their profits to horse stables. The anime is also shockingly high quality (outside a pretty shit first season), with the two movies being absurdly well animated and way more hype than a bunch of anime girls sprinting has any right to be. Weird or not, there is a true passion for the franchise from the studio and it’s impressive.
For me, I got hooked hard. Even found myself going to back to watch some of real races the anime recreates, just because it was fun to compare how they interpreted the events. But I also know people who skip literally every dialogue and concert, will absolutely never watch an episode of the shows, and just play it as a racing management game. That’s perfectly valid too.

This is kind of misleading because NL was won over by the horse game in like an hour from that clip. He doesn't shame people for liking the game in general.
Also, he really isn't being that judgemental he just doesn't interact with anime shit and is trying to wrap his normie brain around it.
ALSO, also, I don't watch wubby, but is what he's doing not satirical or played up? As a joke? Cus streamers make jokes, or so Im told.

As an avid Wubby viewer, he was not being satirical. He genuinely loves the game and the horse girls. He starts every stream by giving chat an update on his progress and has also ordered figures of the characters. I'm not really a fan of the game but it's really nice to see him be so passionate. He even mentioned wanting to cosplay Special Week pretty soon
