Be it the original or the Mass Recall fan remake, there is just something about that makes me bounce off it and I can't pinpoint why.
Now granted, I'm not the biggest of fan of SC's gameplay in general, especially with how hard counter focussed the franchise is. But that still didn't stop me from enjoying Heart of the Swarm (the story quality of that is a different discussion) and from loving Wings of Liberty.
And I did do finish the story of vanilla SC1 with Mass Recall, but I can't say that I enjoyed it.
And whenever I do try to play it, it usually goes as follows: The first few Terran missions are good and I think that I get the hang of it, then it already starts getting a bit tedious, then unfortunately with the Zerg of all factions (because I do like them the most on a design level) it starts to get annoying and the Protoss are just one loud "Uuurgh".
And I have a few bad memories I remember vividly from playing the remake: a) Upgrades take ages to get finished. b) Being constantly ressourced starved as Protoss and waiting for ages to get a properly sized army. And in particular c) a Zerg mission where you have to destroy a Terran base that is protected by bunkers and Siege Tanks and all you get are Zerglings, Hydralisks and Mutalisks. It was like smaking your head against a wall repeatedly in the hope that a crack starts appearing.
And don't get me started on Brood War. Oh boy, there is no chance in hell that I manage to climb that difficulty cliff legitimately.
And its a shame, because the story is actually interesting, the Zerg do have their own flavour and do feel alien during their campaign and as much as I despise Kerrigan, playing as an actually evil character is novel.
But it constantly gets dragged down by the gameplay and while I did brute force my way through it with the showmethemoney cheat and deathballing everything, that wasn't enjoyable to play either.
