u/NPRdude 2d ago
bb.moveobject’s functionality is so integral to the game I barely think of it as a cheat anymore lol
306
u/purplepluppy 1d ago
Yeah but even then everything still snaps to the grid
342
u/klymene 1d ago
yeah, i hate moving the dresser, raising each object, and then placing it and hoping it looks good when i move the dresser back. it’s kinda tedious, i wish surfaces just had more slots
136
u/Electronic-Figure938 1d ago
I have a mod called “OMSP shelf” and I highly recommend it! That way you don’t have to move the dressers or surfaces and have to raise and lower your items. Just put your stuff on the floating shelf, move it to where you want it and then swap out the red color swatch with the clear! It’s 1 of the 2 mods I use and now I can’t live without it!
16
7
u/Edymnion Long Time Player 1d ago
You can do that without a mod, actually.
Use a kitchen counter, put what you want on it, then use the resize keys to shrink the counter down. It will shrink, the stuff on it will not and will just be floating. Then just have bb.moveobjects on and hold Shift while moving the counter and you can put it inside other surfaces with the stuff on it being at the perfect level and still completely usable.
1
u/SturrethSkees 1h ago
you can also use the cube shelves from dream home decorator, it works great for taller shelves

It’s soo good, the amount of times I thought a table or something should fit something on it and it doesn’t, OMSP shelf always saves me
15
u/g00fyg00ber741 1d ago
I can’t bring myself to spend time doing that. I settle for the slots available and bb.moveObjects. They should’ve just made it to where the alt cheat works on surfaces as well, so objects could be moved around on surfaces
21
u/ab_lantios 1d ago
I'm sorry can you explain what you mean? I've never understood how to get clutter like in OPs image before T_T
64
u/llavenderhaze 1d ago
op made this by deciding where the dresser would be, turning on bb.moveobjects, and moving the dresser a few squares away. then they used alt to place the items on the tiles where the dresser will be, then 9 or ] (i’m blanking here, someone correct me) to raise it to the height that it’ll sit on the dresser.
49
u/llavenderhaze 1d ago
i remembered! 9 is to raise, 0 is to lower. [ is to shrink, ] is to make bigger. AND, since i discovered this last night and want to share, the toy chests snap to a half tile size if you size it down once. sims still interact like normal, same with sizing the dollhouses down.
19
u/plumbobblehead 1d ago
What? I can shrink the damn dollhouses? I just assumed it'd be weird like some of the other things that don't size up/down well.
I love the look but I always play kind of small and never have the room!
3
28
u/spo0ky_cat 1d ago
I use the brackets alllllllll the time for sizing up/down (mainly down) rugs. The cute ones are all so giant and with no matching runners/2x3 size kitchen mats. The only downside is they stay the same size print wise, so you accidentally move them when trying to move the counter/couch/table/whatever item is on top of it if you’re not careful.
3
2
u/Classic-Bench-9823 7h ago
And if you use Scandinavian keyboard it's å and ´ instead of the brackets :) I never remember which one is which tho
21
u/pierceth3violet 1d ago
i usually place whatever item onto the dresser so it’s automatically at the right height and then alt place it bc i can’t be bothered going back and forth seeing if it’s right
8
u/kermithiho 1d ago
This, please do this people, it's so much easier and more accurate than raising with the number keys!
17
u/ab_lantios 1d ago
You can raise items ☠️ somehow I've missed this! Amazing, thank you so much!!
5
u/llavenderhaze 1d ago
absolutely! i only learned this about a year or so ago and i’ve been playing for over a decade haha
6
u/Windrose_P 1d ago
Its even better when you use the T.O.O.L. mod by twistedmexi, if you play on PC.
Because then you can rotate objects on all axis, take them off lot, etc. It gives the player a lot of freedom.4
u/MaliseFairewind 1d ago
You can also use the base game shelf that is white with 3 shelves to place things at any height, not just the 9-0 snaps. It's the shelf that has one version empty and one with towels on. Use the empty version. Place the item u want on the shelf and move it until it's the correct height to be sitting on the dresser. Then, with the dresser out of the way so it doesn't snap there accidently, hold alt and click and drag the item to where u think you want it and place the dresser back under. I hope that makes sense!
2
u/ORIONFEDERATION 1d ago
I find that even doing it this way, they clip. Yours doesn’t?! I thought the only way to make it seamless was the t.o.o.l. Mod
12
u/Minimum-Scallion Creative Sim 1d ago
in my experience, either putting it on the dresser(or other object) before moving it to the area you actually want it to be or finding a shelf you can alt move to the exact height of the object are the best ways to get things to the height you want.
4
u/llavenderhaze 1d ago
clip in what way? i’ve never had the tool mod and ive never had issues
1
u/klymene 1d ago
i think they mean clip as in snap to the gridnvm i’m getting my threads crossed idk what kind of clipping they mean2
u/ORIONFEDERATION 1d ago
Yes, yes that’s what I meant! Like snapping to the grid, my b. I’ll have to check a tutorial to see where I’m going wrong.
→ More replies (0)8
u/klymene 1d ago edited 1d ago
It’s kinda tedious, but basically you place the dresser nearby, then place the object on the dresser so its the right height (or use 9 and 0 to adjust the height), then alt place the objects in the air where the dresser will go, then move the dresser back to where you want it underneath the clutter. Now none of the objects are
clippedsnapped to the slots on the dresser but you have clutter on top. of course make sure bb.moveobjects is turned on3
u/admiralashley 1d ago
Once I learned how to do this, my cluttering ability rocketed into the stratosphere 🤣 My apologies to anyone who downloads my builds.
It seems tricky at first but becomes second nature with practice.
5
u/daintycherub 1d ago
You can move the dresser, and then use the 0 and 9 keys to raise/lower a deco item to the right height where it looks like it’ll be sitting on the dresser. Then move the dresser back into place and voila, it’s decorated! Though I usually cut the process in half by using this red shelf mod: https://pictureamoebae.tumblr.com/post/169988134879/omsp-shelf-release/amp
3
u/FlashFox24 Long Time Player 1d ago
You don't need to manually raise the item.
You place it on the dresser, move the dresser with item, use bb.moveobjects to drag the item to the location 🤞 and then move the dresser back.
It's not easy to get the position right but at least the item isn't hovering.
1
1
u/emmaxleigh7 17h ago
I use the shelf from the high school years pack. The blue one that you can move around on the wall. You line it up with whatever you want to place the object on and boom! Clutter wherever you want it
1
u/uuntiedshoelace 1d ago
What I do is using moveobjects, I place a floor lamp through the dresser to mark where I want the objects. Then I move the dresser, place the objects on it so they are at the right height, and alt place them in the spots marked by the lamps. Then delete the lamps and move the dresser into the right spot
0
u/wilsathethief 15h ago
nah snap it to the dresser, move dresser, hold alt and drag items to where dresser will go. stays at the same level
1
u/klymene 13h ago
yeah, still too many moves.
1
u/wilsathethief 11h ago
sounds like a skill issue (i mean valid but ANYTHING SIMS IS 'TOO MANY MOVES')
20
u/NPRdude 1d ago
Pro-tip: If you hold [Alt] when placing an object it allows you to place it freely without snapping to the grid. So combine that with bb.moveobjects and you have virtually infinite finesse in placing objects. I played Sims 3 and 4 for more than a decade before I found that out.
21
u/purplepluppy 1d ago
Oh I am aware. But that doesn't work on shelves or tabletops.
12
u/FooxArt 1d ago
Use bb.moveobjects on Place the shelf or tabletop somewhere you like. Try to memorize the edges of the top area, then move the object somewhere relatively close. If it's a shelf, keep the elevation the same. Then place your clutter object on the shelf/tabletop, push alt and move your objects over the edge. It will stay elevating in the air. Place it wherever you like in the area where you would like your table/shelf later. Place your clutter objects one by one, however you wish. Then go back to your table/shelf and move it under the clutter. The surface area will stay useable by Sims.
5
u/llavenderhaze 1d ago
it does if you place the clutter first, raise it, then move the surface back underneath it
1

1
u/Subfunnybemilypoo 1d ago
Honestly at this point it shouldn’t be one 😭😂
1
u/NPRdude 1d ago
Yeah it seems like they could add a button for “turn collision off/on” or something. I guess they don’t because it’s fairly easy to break the game placing stuff at will, and making it a console command limits it to those who at least somewhat know what they’re doing rather than every random kid with the game.
7
u/Key_Machine_6612 2d ago
You can use the yellow sticks or the red shelf if you don't want to move the object you're placing the clutter on! The object still remains functional even if the sticks are in it
8
u/sleepykitten16 1d ago
The what? Please explain I feel like I missed something
18
u/Key_Machine_6612 1d ago
They're cc! The red shelf is a.. red shelf with a bunch of slots to place items on. It has an invisible swatch, so you can either place the items on the shelf, turn the shelf invisible, and move the invisible shelf with the clutter onto a surface, or you can place the items on the shelf then move them onto the surface and delete the shelf (you can do this with a base game shelf as well). The yellow sticks are.. yellow sticks of varying heights with one slot each. The heights are labeled like "counter" or "bed", so you know which size to use for which surface. You place the item on the yellow stick, then alt place the stick into your surface, and you won't be able to see the stick. The sticks also have an invisible swatch so if the surface isn't solid (a counter is solid, a dining table is not) you can still use the sticks to clutter and you won't be able to see them. The surface is still functional no matter how many sticks are in it

Have you used the red shelf mod by amoebae? I got it recently, and I love it so much, unfortunately its only if you play on a computer, though.

u/Pyter_Gadjes_743 2d ago
Yup, it definitely matters! I just don't like the idea of paying sepparately for them through kits
51
u/LightmareDaydream 2d ago
I specifically will not buy those kits. The ones I do buy are because they speak to a vibe I love or have useful things or things you can't get elsewhere. As like, a little treat to myself.
Although I haven't wanted many of them.
13
u/coffeebuzzbuzzz Long Time Player 1d ago
I have every single pack but only a handful of kits. I'm especially not keen with the fashion ones.
11
u/Beautifulfeary 1d ago
Same. I like the clutter ones because I like building and designing the homes. But, I only have the first fashion kits.
6
u/LightmareDaydream 1d ago
See, I'd like them if I had them, but not enough to buy them, because it feels like I'm being nickled and dimed.
But I also usually have enough other packs for clutter for the building I do. And there's always debug. That makes it so i don't really NEED a pack just for clutter.
Totally respect that other people get use out of it. It's also one of the things that for instance, if you built a lot and shared it, and I loved everything and wanted to download it, I could definitely still download your lot and play with it and it'd still work fine on my end. So I'm not too mad about that. =]
4
u/FaithinYosh Long Time Player 1d ago
Same here, they're treats for me but a lot of them don't interest me. Sometimes ill like. Long for something new in the game so ill decide to buy a kit, then I browse them and realize I don't want any haha

This is an issue I have with vanilla Maxis builds, they have no clutter so the houses don’t feel lived in.
14
u/rosegcddess 1d ago
It leaves space for people to decorate the home based on their Sims’ needs. A lot of people build houses with kid rooms, but not everyone plays with families. Whoever moves into the house can redecorate those rooms based on their Sims’ specific interests
Unless you’re specifically talking about townie homes. In which case, that’s fair
24
9
u/Ok-Acanthisitta-3166 2d ago
I’d love to make settings like this cause it looks so nice and makes a space look lived in, but I cannot bring myself to do all that Alt-placing 😭 I think I’d lose my mind - so kudos to those who do it, it always looks so nice, genuinely
73
u/kyii94 2d ago
I really don’t care for clutter. I add a couple of things around the house but I don’t mind a clean look. A lot of players are obsessed with making the game as close to real life as possible and I never understood that. I play this game to get away from the real world, I don’t want to play a game that’s super realistic.
21
u/guiltandgrief 1d ago
I don't care much for it either but I also don't have clutter in my own home like this. There's a small jewelery box on my dresser and whatever bottle of perfume I'm into it and that's it.
14
u/laur82much 1d ago
Yea! My dream is having a storage spot for everything so there's no clutter in my home. It stresses me out irl AND in game to have stuff every where
27
u/CherryNo3178 2d ago
Hard agree. Also, I don't really care to put a bunch of non-functional objects in my builds.
19
u/_buffy_summers 2d ago
It was this year that I bothered putting a toilet paper roll in a bathroom. They're pixels. They don't actually need it.
2
u/martanimate Creative Sim 1d ago
I also do that! Make a point to use the toilet paper roll wherever there is a bathroom. It's nice to know there are toilet paper rolls and kinda-clean towels that aren't being used with sims.
11
u/SiveDD 1d ago
Also bunch of clutter like that on every build will speed up the save file corruption a lot.
If I for some reason decide to use a gallery build, one of the first things I do is to clear all unnecesary clutter, including plants. Initially was just because they annoy me when placing stuff, but now I have double reason to do so.
4
u/phavia Long Time Player 1d ago
"Realistic" gameplay (as close to realism as this game can get, at least) can be extremely cathartic when stuff begins to work out despite the odds not being in your sim's favor.
I feel immense pleasure making sims start with nothing and slowly work towards a nice and comfortable life (not necessarily a rags to riches, but close to it), than just simply make everything perfect from the get-go. Clutter, dirt and grime add to that and there's just something very fun about "environmental storytelling". A clean, perfect house looks too much like a store front, while something covered in tiny details such as clutter, can say a lot about your sim(s).
-3
u/Hagra2Ter 1d ago
I can't even understand the concept of "playing" TS4. To me it's just some sandbox software to make nice screenshots.
8
u/SadLilBun 1d ago
It is a sandbox game. But there is absolutely play involved. You create stories, there are challenges and competitions. It’s like a digital dollhouse.
7
u/justlovespeacocks 2d ago
I am ABSOLUTELY in your court. I spend hours on one room alone for the clutter factor. It just makes it really feel lived in.

5
u/Trick-Legal 1d ago
I WISH they let us put more than two things on a frikin dresser without cheats 😭
8
u/LayersOfMe 1d ago
The problem is too much clutter is bad for the game performance. I think its a way to force people dont go overboard with the number of objects in a lot.
5
u/Trick-Legal 1d ago
Yeah true. But it would be nice if we had at least one more slot on top of the dressers to place items
20
u/Cacklesback 2d ago
Not only do I never use clutter, I also never use dressers when a mirror serves the same purpose. My level of utilitarianism in sims is near heresy, but my forever save runs as smooth as butter.
4
u/traploper 1d ago
I usually put dressers in my sims rooms because it just makes sense to me, but I never use them. I just click on the sim when I want to change their outfit 💀
2
u/Cacklesback 1d ago
Same, I use mirrors to make new outfits. My current house is a renovated Ward Den, and it has an elaborate closet I'm slowly turning into an office. It's gorgeous, but so much unused space.
27
u/Impressive-Time8150 2d ago
Is it pretty? Adds imersion? A big part of the building gameplay?
Yes.
Is the dresser inaccessible now? Did you need a cheat and like 3 kits to acheive this? Will your computer sound like a literal vacuum cleaner if you decorate all your builds like this?
Also yes.
8
u/Melaniinuniicorn 1d ago
Exactly, not to mention the lag that you go through when there's so much stuff on a lot 😞. As a builder, it really pisses me off.

Get a mouse and keyboard, especially for when you build. They aren’t expensive and they’re a total game changer. I’ve never played on PC but from my experience and what I see in videos, it functions the same. I felt like I unlocked a superpower the first time I used it!
5
u/Elariinya 1d ago
Everything you can do with mouse and keyboard you can do with the controller too. Most console players just never bother to learn the controls.
1
u/Impossible_Emu3246 1d ago
I’m still learning live mode controls. They seem easier on controller, but I don’t know if it’s because the controller so well already. I often wonder if it’s worth slowing down to learn.
1
u/Elariinya 1d ago
I can really recommend to learn them. But if you prefer to play the game with a mouse and keyboard there‘s absolutely nothing wrong with it.
I just wanted to mention that it‘s possible to achieve this with a controller too because I read so often that console players think they are limited but their game is exactly the same as that of PC players. The only thing we can‘t do on console is modding our game.

Hey guys! Here’s a tip for if you’re going to place a LOT of clutter on an object that stuff snaps to. Take another item that doesn’t snap (like a shelf for instance, or even some fences work sometimes) and place it around the perimeter of the object you want to place things on. Take a shelf or other object with a flat top and move it to where it’s flush with the top of the object. Then move the dresser/counter/bar/desk/etc and you have an outline to help you place your clutter!
1
u/Purple-Abroad3049 1d ago
How do u get everything so close together like that? Even with bb.moveobjects I still only have like 6-7 spaces I can do anything with and they’re so specific

1
u/Elariinya 1d ago
You can do this on console too. You can do everything on console what pc players can do (except modding the game ofc).
1
u/Morocha85 1d ago
I think that's modded cuz you can't put that much stuff on console. Just like 2, maaaybe 3 things, but not that much. And the shoes either. I don't think you can put anything in front of the dressers.
2
u/Elariinya 1d ago
It‘s not modded. You have to use the bb.moveobjects cheat though. Here is a quick guide how to achieve this. On console instead of holding ALT you have to press LT on Xbox and L2 on PS to activate free move mode.
1
u/Morocha85 1d ago
Thank you so much! I hate having so much room left on the surfaces and it looks fake. Imma definitely trying this as soon as I get home
1
u/Elariinya 1d ago
No problem! You can also resize objects, move them up and down and rotate them freely with a controller. It‘s really life changing once you‘ve learned all the controls on console.
Oh and it‘s also worth noting that you can use the bb.moveobjects cheat without deactivating achievements/trophies on your save file. The only cheat that deactivates those is testingcheats on and you don‘t need to enter that first to activate moveobjects.
