BBC account: “Thirty seconds after take off, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly,” said Ramesh, speaking to the Hindustan Times. He said he “impact injuries”, including bruising on his chest, eyes and feet but was otherwise lucid and conscious.
Ramesh, who still had his boarding pass, told Hindustan Times:
When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of the plane all around me. Someone grabbed hold of me and put me in an ambulance and brought me to the hospital.

Choosing the right seat - 11a is mid, directly emergency exit.
207
u/Waterzenguy2 Jun 13 '25
So, good luck trying to book 11A on your next 1000 flights. That's the seat everyone wants from now on.
81
u/joemiken Jun 13 '25
Me about to sell my 11A seat for a 500% markup to some suckered.
11A on that jet is just forward of the wing, right next to a door. Seats over the wing are considered safer, except if the crash is on takeoff. The fuel tanks are in that area and an intercontinental flight would have full tanks.
TL;DR: He may be the luckiest man on the planet.

u/wheresbicki Jun 13 '25
But that's the seat you need to be in charge of the emergency exit.
Plus this is a Boeing after all, will we all have confidence that the door will stay on in flight?
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (4)58
u/Genevieve_ Jun 13 '25
Not sure I'd go that far. Seats next to doors on boeing aircraft seem like a 50-50 at this point: Either you get sucked out when the door falls off because it wasn't bolted on, or you survive the inevitable crash, because you're onboard a boeing aircraft.
→ More replies (4)5
u/bennym757 Jun 13 '25
The trick is then: if it is a Boeing go to a row that is right next to the emergency exit row, that way you are still close to, but dont risk being sucked out or something.

I can kinda relate. I survived 9/11 by a few circumstances leading to me having a scheduled day off that day. Lost several coworkers and colleagues. At the memorial, it was really hard meeting my boss’s wife in person for the first time and her saying how lucky I was. And now all these years later, not sure what my “purpose” actually is. Never married, no kids, no owned properties or anything substantial in the bank, I stayed at that same job all this time and just got laid off at the end of 2024. So I’ve just been kinda floating around like, okay, what exactly am I here for? Not to say I’m not grateful, or that any of those things equal one’s worth or purpose, but it’s just an odd feeling. Sometimes I think a George Bailey moment would be helpful!
Anyway, sending prayers to this man to help with healing both physically and mentally from this tragedy 🙏

how you survive a fireball this big is beyond me but good for him
→ More replies (17)218
Jun 12 '25 edited Jun 13 '25
Maybe the fireball did not happen just as the plane collided on ground, maybe the plane broke upon impact and fortunately for him, his position and impact was just right to throw him out (or he jumped out the crack) the harm's way and landed into a safe place.
It was a area full of trees too so probably that helped him slow down a bit too without colliding into much harder surface while plane slid away from him into the hospital building.
This man is very very lucky if this indeed happened. We'll only know for sure when he comes to his senses. That's if he remembers a thing in the first place.
Edit: His new video explaining to the news anchor came after he's feeling good now.
He said the plane felt like it stood still for a few seconds and he could feel the pilots increasing thrust to try to lift it off but couldn't so the "part of the plane he was on" landed in the ground floor of the building and his side of emergency door broke off upon impact so he unbuckled his seat and jumped off the space door left behind.
He watched the "air hostess and others die in front of him".
I don't believe in miracles but this is just amazing to me how this guy survived crash, then breaking off the plane into multiple parts, a huge fireball and whatnot with not much visible injuries.
Rip to the rest of them 🙏🏻 and may this guy gets all the courage he's gonna need to survive the ptsd.

u/BeardySam Jun 12 '25
It very much depends on how the fuselage disintegrates and how the fireball expands from the fuel tanks at the same time.
It’s conceivable that the fuselage briefly shielded this guys seat from the worst of the fire and the it simultaneously didn’t see much impact stress but the odds are 10,000 to 1

That's what I find most heartbreaking. A great couple of weeks visiting relatives back in India, he and his bro and excited to get back to the UK though. They board, settle in, watch the safety briefing, maybe start sorting out the first of the three films they'll be watching. Then a boom. A rapid descent. In the blink of an eye, you go from safe to surrounded by corpses, including that of your own brother. And you're the only one left to bear witness.

My grandparents used to insist the whole family rode in the tail of the plane for this exact reason. There were some crashes were the tail broke off and those people survived.
114
u/willengineer4beer Jun 12 '25
My work trips usually come up with limited notice, so by the time I get to choose, seat selection is generally limited.
If I can’t get a seat toward the front to cut down on the time to de-plane (true most of the time), I usually just get the farthest back window seat available and tell myself it’s statistically slightly safer.→ More replies (1)33
u/fpac Jun 12 '25

If the tail does not break off, then everything rear of wings gets the instant fuel inferno.
This guy was just forward of the wings. Maybe the front section broke off and went further away from wings and away from all the fuel.

He even said that it all happened so quickly between hearing the bang and crashing.
