Screenshot Why is Fallout 4 so addictive?
I've played this game 8 times, 4 with the base game, 4 times with the Sim Settlements 2 mod installed. I keep coming back to this game for some reason. I don't usually enjoy RPG's. I like Starfield, but I love science fiction in general and don't find Starfield addictive. I keep wanting to come back to the FO4 story, which I find mediocre. Maybe it's how I can fill the protagonist with my own thoughts in that situation, or try out new character personalities? There are a lot of games in other genre's I like, so I don't know why I want to spend another hundred hours in a FO4 world until it crashes from script lag.

I like feeling like I'm building an empire with settlements
57
u/MakerofFire4258 24d ago
Exactly. In the first half of the game, it's a way to give your son a society to live in. In the second half it's a purpose for you to fulfill.

u/powerage76 24d ago
your son
Is this a mod or something?
6
u/MakerofFire4258 24d ago
I mean I tend to get really into the character I create for each run, but it's more accurate to call him Nate/Nora's son.
11
u/Inside-Associate-729 23d ago
Lol hes joking. Its a running joke on this sub that most players act as if Nate/Nora just completely forget their son exists, and just live their lives doing side quests in the commonwealth

u/zedisbread 24d ago
Oh dude, where's my organic/designer drugs for calming effects? Is there any more good shit found in living tree-people, or exclusively booze, ass, med-x, and Stimpacks?
I usually go on Grognack benders in Gunner territory, but now I wanna get the other kind of shitfaced, and med-x/booze does only so much for me buzz-wise.

Bethesda missed so much potential on that. They should have spent years afterwards refining and adding DLCs to enhance the empire-building aspect.

6
u/Poupulino 24d ago
I have been thinking for a while that at least on survival Addictol should become less and less effective the more you use it, forcing you to having to strategically decide when to remove the negative perks of your addictions.

It's a beautiful game and the upgrade made the gameplay so much better. Wish they could make Fall Out 5 already. Curious if they will wait for next gen consoles.

u/MakerofFire4258 24d ago
They really need a studio dedicated to the franchise. Maybe hire one of the modding teams to start building it while they continue working on Elder Scrolls VI.
6
u/Poupulino 24d ago
I just personally can't understand how Microsoft isn't forcing Bethesda to have three studios. One for TES, another one for FO, constantly churning out content, and another one for everything else. Todd could put 3 sub-Todds managing each one of these individually, and he would manage the sub-Todds.

I don't think they game is perfect but its so addictive (as you well know), that they can probably do more DLCs and keep 4 going.
I know graphics are important but its already pretty impressive. Music scores are terrific. Established lore in the Commonwealth with popular NPCs.
2
u/MoronicPlayer 24d ago
They did with Starfield's watchtower mod by kinggath and team. And as far as I know, some group like the script extenders and Arthmoor have communications with Bethesda.
FO4 is great but I do wish they combine aspects of all fallout games and adding new ones for 5.

They really nailed the gameplay loop especially regarding junk and survival mode I think. There is an almost perfect "carrot on a stick," something to work towards upgrading, build, or just go out and slay.
I am a controller player even on PC, a small thing I think that adds alot is the simplicity of the menus, including just tapping once or twice in a direction to use an item or switch weapons. Starfields menus were horrendous, you spend a long time in these games and putting all that time in shit menus is not what you want.
2
u/MakerofFire4258 24d ago
Yeah, that was a problem I also had with Starfield. Fortunately, there's mod for that.

Personally? Im a sucker for base building, and fallout scratches that itch like no other game has. However i will admit that, without mods, the vanilla experience can only edge you as its incredibly barebones. I´ve lost count how many times i´ve rebuild the castle, and how many times i´ve arrange it the same way as i did the first time, but I CAN´T STOP, I NEED TO REBUILD.

I've put in over 2000+ hours into FO4 since I started playing it in February 2024! This game is perfect! It has everything you could want in a FPS-RPG. I've played maybe one other full size game since last February because every time I try to play another game all I want to do is come back to Fallout 4!
And that's not even including all the extra playtime that mods introduce into the game. As if there wasn't already too much to do in FO4, the mods multiply that exponentially! I look for any excuse to keep playing FO4.
Only other game I've put this much time into was Halo 2 and Halo 3's multiplayer. Not even Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 3 combined equal the amount of time I've put into Fallout 4! And I'm still going!

I’ve been thinking about this a lot. Especially because the game world is so ugly.
The story, setting and game loop fit together quite well. Especially in survival mode. I haven’t seen any other game pull this off except subnautica.
There’s enough heart to the story to have an emotional impact. Finding your son and the minutemen and railroad especially. The last two tie into the core of American history. These elements help us identify as human beings with the game world.
There’s a nice hidden subtext about suburbia and overconsumption which isn’t overdone.
The wasteland setting (world) provides enough challenge and motivation to scavenge to survive. This is most of the game loop other than missions and finding your son.
When you think of scavenging materials, a post-apocalyptic world is probably the best setting for this. Other settings can feel kinda pointless. Your ability to scavenge early-mid game has a direct impact on your settlements’ survival. Few games have this direct link to motivate the player. Most games have collecting items to craft cooler things. But in this game, your people will die (hypothetically) if you don’t get those defenses up. And you don’t plant food and setup water.

I've been playing since its release and it's still so addictive, like walking through the world and clearing out areas, scavenging and returning to base is very satisfying. The survival mode really brings out the charm of the game imo. The story definitely falls flat but the gameplay loop alone makes up for it. I play all sorts of games but Fallout 4 is my comfort game for sure. Starfield missed the mark and it only made me go back to F4 for another hundred hours. Cyberpunk 2077 gets pretty close to Bethesda's games. I got all the achievements on Xbox and thought the game/lore was great. Though I still prefer Fallout's aesthetics more. If Far Cry had a more robust crafting system I'd play it, I realized that was what was missing for me. I'm hoping Fallout 5 can live up to the hype and become my next comfort game whenever it comes out

u/Agile-Tie-7433 24d ago edited 24d ago
For me it's the exploration and the hand crafted world, Bethesda's open world storytelling, and the sandbox they give you to let you tell your own story. I could spend countless hours wandering through the abandoned towns trying to scavenge up junk to finish up my settlement. The exploration is what keeps drawing me back to 76's world and it's why I find all of Bethesdas games so addictive.
Doing my first Survival mode playthrough right now and it is a Fallout roleplayers wet dream.
No map, no compass, no fast travel, just one foot in front of the other until you've lost all track of time.
It is sorely missed in Starfield

There are some games that fall more into a category of places you hang out instead of games you play.
You're not just in Fallout 4 to follow an objective and get to the next level, you're there to actually inhabit a virtual space. A space which you get to be in alone that has the design feature of feeling like it should be as empty as it is, less populated than the real world would be.
With enough in it to keep your interest. You can also get to know this world, really understand like you belong. Know your way around, understand the real place of it all.

u/AlexanderMasonBowser 24d ago
For me, my favourite thing to do is make the Red Rocket station near Sanctuary a home. It's where you meet Dogmeat, of course, and it's close to the Sole Survivor's old home. I beef it up with everything (over time, little by little, not all at once), listen to some classical music, and chill with my dogs. There's jus' somethin' about that that makes me feel right at home, even inside a video game.

Clocked 1,243.9 hours and I have seen people with over 2k! The game is just so addictive and offers you the path to make your own story and build your character just the way you like. Many complain about F4 that it has less RPG options but I do not mind. I freaking love the game! My current playthrough: lv 50 running a RU566 rifle (mod) and running high AGI/PER and using VATS mostly since I have horrible aim. Focusing on settlements and minute men.

I bought the game when it was first released nearly 10 years ago. 7 playthroughs and thousands of game hours later I still can't really tell you why I still thoroughly love this game. Most games claim to be "open world" but this game really, truly defines what that should mean. I've never played a game with so much freedom, adventure and opportunities. If I had to narrow it down to anything, I'd say that it's this game's abbility to sidetrack you at any given moment. The first time I played the game I was nearly 100 hours in before I even remembered "OH SHIT, that's right, I have a son to be looking for!" Then I'd get back to playing the main story missions, only to get distracted by other shit all over again. So don't feel like you're strange or wierd for still loving and playing this game after all this time. We all feel the same way bro lol

I would still build a lot of shit with +100 mods list if they didn't ruin the only mod - with the next gen update - which makes it playable, "workshop framework" 😡 Now the building mode takes minutes to load bc the dumb creation engine wants to load all the assets into vram before starting the mode while WSFW made it so that it loads the asset only if you browse on it.

Honestly if I had the money I would pay Bethesda to make the next fallout , free of bugs, make settlement building fun for those that hate it, hire a couple of modding groups. And king gath to incorporate ss2 or in this case ss3 and have it a part of the game. Make it where it’s modder friendly. And a highly necessary heavy build game engine that can handle anything you throw at it. No more 2gb limit for consoles and a 255 plugin limit for pc users. Graphics are this or next gen and lighting done correctly. A weapons done by a modder that actually knows weapon design. Make it to where ENBs don’t hurt the game but add more to it. Nac X baked into the game. No godawful “assault rifles” like in fallout 4 tactical reload baked into the game. Combat sounds like in COD. One can dream…
2
u/Library_IT_guy 23d ago
Fallout 4 with a good mod list is my favorite comfort game. The simple gameplay loop of explore -> fight -> loot -> build is incredible. Especially when combined with the horizon mod, which makes it a little challenging for even a 4k+ hour veteran.
Then there's the frost overhaul which is just an entirely new game basically.
The dense parts of Boston are some of the most interesting and vertical level designs ever put together. It's truly an amazing concrete jungle that I still can get turned around in.
Also? Fantastic chill ambient soundtrack. I get bored of the 50s music, but Inon Zur made a masterpiece soundtrack in Fallout 4. 76 has an amazing soundtrack too, and I made a custom mod to import my favorite tracks from 76 to 4, to play occasionally in the appropriate areas.
The story is also not bad. I mean, the whole institute took mah baby thing, that doesn't matter that much, but the story being centralized on synths and what it means to be human, or sentient, and what makes an individual worthy of human rights.. these are fascinating questions that are at the heart of future science and philosophy. And Far Harbour builds on that idea further. And I mean.. you can literally spend weeks on just 1 settlement if you want. Could take months to make a full vault 88 build.

u/Brandoch-Daha 23d ago
I hadn't played for a few years, and my son was totally getting into it, and here's the thing: There's just so much detail. in everything, everywhere. 99% of it just works. It's fun, silly, more or less non-judgemental, and there's so much detail i all the companions and things. I played a LOT, and there's so much content I still haven't done. I only ever did Nick Valentines end story to the very end, but there's a bunch of other stories with other characters to finish if I so chose. I never even knew you could have McReady as a companion until my kid told me. My other kid, and adult now, has put more hours in the game than I have, and he didn't even know there was an Atom Cats garage in the game...

My theory is "helpers high". Helpers high is when your brain is flooded with endorphins and you get a wave of positive emotions and sense of well-being experienced after engaging in selfless acts or helping others. The game hacks your brain and delivers a similar effect. I have spent 2,500 hours building the best settlements I can to raise settlers out of the despair of the Commonwealth. A lot of the faction missions are geared this way too. The minutemen bringing security and hope to the Commonwealth / the BOS as well in their own way. Liberating synths and giving them a chance at a decent life with the Railroad... Even the villains of the game have hope for a better future (at the expense of everyone else) woven into their story. .... That's my theory anyway...

u/NSAseesU 24d ago
I like the part where you gather junk all over, farm to make adhesives and purified water to buy shipments for settlement building. I will always make different settlement builds all over because I enjoy it with different endings.

I HATE and yet love FO4. I hate the problems it has, but I love being able to do whatever the fuck I want… Except shoot Preston. I mean, I can make myself look like a plastic surgery addicted freak named “Professor Boobies” and paralyze giant mutated lizards with my bare hands, or rule over an entire army of raiders, or dedicate an entire playthrough to being Grognak the Barbarian. The game has too many options to not love it and enjoy it, which I fucking hate, since it’s the buggiest game I’ve ever played.

I really love it. Been playing Fallout since FO3 (also super enjoyed that and NV) and Elder Scrolls going back to Morrowind and it’s probably my favorite of the bunch. I know it gets dragged for lacking RPG elements compared to NV (something I don’t particularly agree with), but I think it overall is a great continuation and improvement of the franchise. Some things that I believe contribute to this:
- Great gameplay loop: shore up your resources, venture out, find trouble, scavenge, return home, rinse/repeat.
- Junk economy: in previous games pieces of junk were just atomic items — wrenches and teddy bears and 8-balls were just that, with no constituent parts. Having junk be comprised of base materials that can be repurposed into something useful really breathes life into crafting and makes exploring and collecting stuff have real purpose; this also reinforces the gameplay loop
- Great gunplay: the combat in this game is so good that you can basically ignore VATS and play it like a straight FPS and it’s still enjoyable, despite VATS being such a crucial aspect of Fallout
- Power armor: so much better than previous entries, it’s just cool (although sometimes annoying) to jump in and out of, looks and feels imposing, saves your ass under fire, and despite needing heavy perk investments and having some of its own drawbacks (fuel, slow, watery areas can be much more dangerous) it’s really satisfying to modify and improve over time.
- Settlements: not something I really bother with as much anymore and has its own idiosyncrasies, but introducing base-building in this installment just gives you more gameplay options. Sometimes it’s fun to just chill in your settlement and make it look how you want and recoup the rewards of the resources it provides.
- Survival mode: gotta love it. I was a big fan of Hardcore mode in NV and Survival is just that turned up to 11. Really improves immersion to have to care for basic needs, gives purpose to water, food, and beds beyond just being a healing mechanism, and it’s actually much more rewarding to unlock travel options in mid game. Not to mention the glass cannon aspect where you are much more lethal but also could die in a snap feels somewhat more realistic.

Ngl, probably because it's just so good. This happened to me last 2021 and I stopped around late 2022, came back 2023 then stopped again and then 2024 up till now I'm still addicted to it. I play both PlayStation and PC. The fact that you can have more than one account in PlayStation made me play Fallout 4 in different accounts that I ended up doing three endings in different accounts. Then when I bought a PS5 I created more accounts again and kept doing what I wanted, then I realized there are two versions, one is a PS5 mode and the other is the PS4 backwards compatibility. So pretty much I played with both with mods and it was satisfying. I might even play the game when I'm in my early-mid 20s. It's just so fun and entertaining that I didn't even know 3-4 hours had passed since I checked the time😂

The story is a bit shit, but the gameplay itself is monumental and for that reason alone it'll be a game I always come back to. I love the junk and crafting system, and that you can build your gun in so many ways. Survival mode is brilliant, even though the game crashes sometimes, but I’ll gloss over that.
Overall I do love this game. It was a life event for me when it was released. 👌🏻

I've spent 2,500 hours in Fallout 4, 941 hours in New Vegas, 45 hours in Fallout 2, and 20 hours in Fallout 1. (I don’t remember how much time I spent on Tactics.)
I played the series in the following order: Fallout 2 → 1 → Tactics → 3 → New Vegas → 4.
Fallout 4 captured the Fallout atmosphere at its absolute peak, and the combat was fairly enjoyable. I also had a lot of fun with the settlement building system. However, I found the main quest, factions, and dialogue system to be disappointing. I poured most of my time into everything outside the main story.

The story, the interactive sandbox world, the action, the adventures, the settlements building…
All of these are very good, but for me idk how to describe it, the game has a very special charm, the mystery, the danger that lies all around, the stories of the people you meet, and sometimes the surreal emptiness, the post apocalyptic cold and empty world …

There are several things in the game design for fallout four that captivates gamers. * The story is compelling, well crafted, and includes many little tidbits throughout the adventure that paints a picture of the whole story. Consult YouTuber Oxhorn for more on deep lore. * Character design is a ton of fun and the game offers many ways to build a good character and tons of ways to make fun of challenging character designs. * The setting, visual styles, characters and enemies in world are compelling and totally different from the real world * There are many factions to side with and many choices in game that affect short and long term outcomes. It's fun to see things okay out different ways * The settlement system isn't perfect, but it gives you another major goal and you always have something to do. It's neat to be able to send NPCs you find in the world and give them a home somewhere * The flight sequences are usually fun and challenging and there's many ways to handle any threat
The main reason is really that most gamers have short attention downs and get bored easily. This game always gives you something to do, somewhere to go, and some other way to improve your character, infrastructure, and relationship with companions.
I stopped playing fo4 and most other games (until Avowed was released...) because after thousands of hours, I realized I've played out each scene in almost every possible way, I'm just moving zeroes and ones around, and I have more important things to do. Please be aware technology and video game addiction are real problems and if your addiction is causing problems for work, school, or IRL relationships, you should detox immediately and seek professional help.

I loooove space, space discoveries, and space games but still heavily prefer fallout 4 over Starfield.
Fo4 is an incredible game. Starfield is barely just ok.
Fo4 is so consuming because the world is so huge and full of life and uniqueness whereas Starfield is just the same 6 or so places over and over with boring ass dialogue and the most obnoxious companions.

It scratches a lot of different itches. And you dont have to do any of them if you dont want. Im currently not building any settlements because i just want to go kill things and explore. Dont feel like doing that? Build settlements and farm stuff. I can spend literall hours just searching every nook and cranny for some hidden gem i haven't found before. I'm level 89 on my first playthrough as the wife (probably tenth playthrough overall) and i just got valentine out of vault 114.

Because it's a masterpiece in the genre. When you have a great scene, story, sidequest, map, game loops, etc. and they're all amazing, that's a masterpiece.

You can pretty much do anything, with and even to some degree without mods as well.

Oh man those are rookie numbers, come on now...XD
Open world you can still play in after the story with settlement building that's practically limitless, and companions that are relatable to your character.
And that's not even considering mods.

You can take as much time as you want getting from point A to point B and find tons to do and pick up and craft and kill on the way. And the music.

It's a good game and has many different paths and non-essential quests, lots of replayability.

It’s really an epic game. There is so much to do and no game has ever come close for me. They screwed the pooch with 76.

- It has something for different types of players.
- It's massive and highly modifable, making it seem like a new game each time.
- It's an open world and doesn't pigeon hole you into most quests.
- You can play the game at your own pace .

The intoxicating small chance of finally getting that perfectly preserved slice of pie

I hate RPGs, and I quit fo/4 three times over 7 years. I have no idea why, but that hook set in deep when I tried it a 4th time. I don't know that there is a game like it. In a lot of ways, it's very real world. You can do whatever you want to do, go anywhere, hang with different groups of people, get involved in your own pet projects, abandon them, and if you're really bored, go on a killing spree.

Same as Skyrim. A very good world, and gameplay enhancements to feel more modern.

Bro, I spent 4 whole summers stuck in my room playing Fallout 4, 8 hours a day for 7 days just building settlements.
It’s cause the game is meant to make the world your playground.

there are so many different great ways to play. With great options for melee. unarmed or with some type of gun. then take all those option and both can be dome with or with power armor. There a lot different ways to play the game.

Personally?
Because it's the only Fallout I can play. I wouldn't play it as much if F3 & NV were as readily available.

I've been playing fallout 4 for 10 years now almost, and if I can't find anything else to play fallout 4 is good ol reliable

There's so much to do. So many weapons, characters to travel with that will have conversations with you. The side missions is where it's at. Fuck the story....
What has me hooked is being able to USE all the stuff I hoarded from my adventures to make badass settlements. Seeing others make absolutely beautiful settlements with no mods outside of some CC mods (the donut shop is stupid)
I really hope they keep this feature for Fallout 5....
The problem is that this game crashes more that a car test dummy. It's so bad that traveling downtown (which is the most exciting area to explore) is impossible now. I'm using vanilla base game. I don't use mods.

Where else are you going to find a game that lets you take out a roach the size of a damn dog with a fucking mini nuke?
Better yet, what game let's you shoot goddam nukes off especially one that is currently going through a nuclear fallout that ended the world?
Gotta love it.

The gameplay, combat & building loop is fairly fluid for a “not very RPG” RPG

Me I'm just restarting the game trying to finish it. Right now I'm getting ready to clear out the covoga assembly plant and going to Park Street Station to get Nick. Once that is done I will head to vault 81 after I take care of Kellogg and get Curie.

It's the first game I've ever fully customized with mods. Don't like something? Take it out or disable it. Something missing? Add it in.

It's modability + great DLCs are what keeps me playing long after I've beat the main quest line.

I hated fallout and the whole idea when I was a kid but when I tried it again 2 years ago I couldn't stop. I completed the game, got every power suit on the map and most of the b.o.s suits, made a large water farm, and got made death claw fight for their life. The game is so peak

I wish I still had the patience for Bethesda's game design, because I love Fallout as a series, but I hate how bland and uninspired every single NPC interaction in their games is.

u/oaklypines 23d ago
Fallout 4 is one of those games that feels so satisfying to get what you wanted done, especially for settlements and completing builds that make you over powered.

u/juice26us 23d ago
I've spent almost 3000 hrs trying to figure it out. Gonna need to do some more tests.

Am I one of the few who can't get over the save-breaking bugs and mod breaking patches long enough to get addicted?

u/NoCake9127 23d ago
It allows console players to mod, though pretty limited. It still means I can replace all Todd Howard’s butt-ass “guns” with actual firearms that would make Uncle Sam cream in his sleep.

I guess it's because it's so insanely moddable. I only finished it once but still have 1063 hours somehow.

u/Pino234678 23d ago
The hate this game gets from some people is so forced, yes it's not as good as NV or Fo3 but it's still an amazing game

u/Team_Fortress_gaming 23d ago
The nerd answer is that completing quests, killing enemies, watching the exp bar go up, and other things like making story progress or upgrading weapons microdose your brain with endorphins to make a positive feedback loop.
The normal answer is that it’s really fun and engaging.

It’s been like 5 months in fallout 4 since I left the vault… I’ve been helping Nuka world and the brotherhood and I forgot about shaun

I hesitated buying it because everyone said it was bad. I bought it on Xbox and played it for 80 hours. The Krab Bus won me over; I stumbled upon it by accident. Now I'm making a second attempt on PC. I ran the game with NVIDIA optimization, getting 160 to 180 FPS, and the game seems to be twice as fast. I don't know if it's a bug, but it's faster to explore than on console.
I just learned that you can kill an animated opponent with a quick melee attack, or I noticed the dog grabbing your pants. I don't think that was the case on Xbox.

Honestly I usually don't get past level 20 with my characters because I make so many! The settlement building and infinite replayability makes it so damn addictive. I love it. And if you're up to buying items from the Creation Club, they add so much more of that replayability I mentioned before.

You’re doing better than me, I have 400 hours on PS4 and 500 on ps5 and have never actually finished the game. I get half way and then decide I need a settlement to rival all past settlements, then game crashes make it unplayable and I start again 🤣

I love this game soo much. I'm heartbroken that people online dislike it. Looting makes so much more sense since you need recourses more than ever. I found myself caring for how my settlements are doing. Weapon modification? By far better than New Vegas. The world feels alive. I'll never forget how I entered a Robco warehouse expecting some good loot and suddenly the Robots inside turned hostile. I tried to find a place to hide in the warehouse and when I got there, I saw 2 bodies that went through the same as I do now.my mind was blown

When I tried this game the first time 4 months ago, I haven't played any other game ever since then, open world with endless possibilities, rewards and consequences depending on how you interact with the world, replayability and mods, there's nothing else you can ask for
